To have a healthy, attractive smile, you must first have a healthy bite. When the bite is out of alignment (called malocclusion), a variety of problems can occur. The most prevalent is temporomandibular joint disorder, (TMD).
Dr. Marshall is highly trained in the diagnosis and treatment of TMD. First, she will conduct a thorough exam of your bite, using the Myomonitor K7 and a TENS unit. The Myomonitor K7 is a computerized EMG diagnostic tool that tracks the position of your jaw both at rest and in motion. The TENS unit stimulates your jaw with low frequency pulses to help the muscle find its most relaxed state. In combination, these two systems help Dr. Marshall determine the most optimal position for your jaw.
You may be a candidate for TMJ treatment if you experience any of the following symptoms on a regular basis:
If you are diagnosed with a malocclusion, Dr. Marshall will recommend a treatment plan that will correct your bite and alleviate pain and discomfort.
Treatment plans include the use of a dental orthotic to gently shift the position of your teeth. Alternatively, Dr. Marshall may use dental restorations placed on one tooth, several teeth or every tooth. Dental restorations will precisely raise or lower areas of your bite to create a naturally comfortable position for your jaw.
